VIVA Partner José Cánovas makes waves at the European Championships

What with the Costa del Sol’s fabulous year-round climate, it comes as no surprise that – as well as working hard of course – in their spare time the VIVA team are also into sports and leisure activities in a very big way. We have swimmers, golfers, hikers, bikers, kayak fishermen, mountaineers, skydivers, marathon runners… colleagues who play tennis, padel and squash… skiers and snowboarders, kitesurfers, surfboarders, horse riders… you name it!

And now, we have a sea kayaking champion, too…

Despite high seas forcing 26 competitors to pull out of the regatta, while 15 kayakers had to return to the starting line, Nerja-born José Cánovas – and VIVA Partner of the Marbella Town area office – finished in a very creditable 3^rd place at the ‘Eurochallenge 2014 Surfski & Kayak’ event held in Villajoyosa (Alicante) earlier this month.

With the sea whipped up by 35kph winds, José – who also won the Spanish Sea Kayaking Championships last September – explains that the 12km regatta was ‘challenging’, with only the more experienced kayakers being able to take advantage of the waves. ‘What we achieved was only possible because of the daily training sessions that the good weather on the Costa del Sol permits, plus of course our fantastic coach, Jesús Narváez’, says José.
