The Costa del Sol’s famous resorts are proving popular with Brits this summer.

British visitors to Andalucía ploughed more than €1 billion into the region in the month of April alone, new figures from Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE) have revealed.

Over the first four months of the year, that figure is €2.8 billion, with the coming summer months set to see those numbers rise sharply as the Costa del Sol readies itself for what promises to be the busiest summer ever…

Compared to last year, spending is already up 7.8 per cent among foreign tourists, with Brits increasing their spending by more than 6.7 per cent in April this year compared to last year. The strength of the pound against the euro, coupled with a recovering economy in the UK, has tempted even more Brits to Spain, and compelled them to dig a little deeper into their pockets.

German tourists have been equally enamoured with the delights of the Costa del Sol, spending €789 million in the region in April, with the French also adding a further €639 million to the coffers. These figures show just how important the tourism industry is to Spain’s wider economy, and highlights just why Spain prides itself on the cleanliness of its beaches and the friendliness of its service in the leading resorts.

Tourist spending is also up in many other regions of Spain, the INE confirmed, with Madrid registering €593 million spent in April – a massive 34.7 per cent increase on 2014. On average nationwide, spending by foreign tourists in April was up by 18.9 per cent compared to 2014.
