The UK has been basking in sunny weather, but how long will it last?

It’s the headline I’ve gone with, but it’s not really headline news: Spain enjoys hotter, more stable and longer summers than the UK. The world and his dog knows that. It’s best not to rub this fact in normally; if there’s one thing politicians, scientists, entrepreneurs and teachers cannot do to improve life in Britain, it’s sort out the weather of an island lying in a blustery corner of the north Atlantic…

You’d think, given the perennially awful seasons that the UK is normally subjected to, that us Brits are fine with such unpredictable, grey, chilly weather. But then the last few days have made me remember just how much the Brits love the sun.

At Wimbledon over the weekend, temperatures topped 30c. Elsewhere in London, the capital basked in temperatures that were hotter than Rome, Paris, Prague and Zagreb. It’s being termed a ‘heatwave’, but the fine weather is expected to last for a few weeks yet. Great news all round, and the evidence on the streets of Britain confirmed it: the sunshine lifts the mood.

Brits were out playing in parks, swimming in seas, slurping ice cream besides normally windswept city centre fountains, and drinking in beer gardens across the land. And they were doing so with smiles on faces.

It’s all very reminiscent of Spain, and should serve as a timely reminder to Britons just why the idea of a property in Spain is the stuff of achievable dreams. Those warm summer evenings Brits are currently enjoying happen like clockwork on the Costa del Sol. Bright sunny mornings that warm your back and put a spring in your step are a year-round joy down in Andalucía. The feeling of sand between toes or strolling barefoot across spongy grass: nature’s pedicure is always open for business in the south of Spain.

The last few days have instilled a shining, smiling shot of joy through the hearts of Britons, and the population has largely responded in kind. But it won’t last, unfortunately. Perhaps we will see out July in a warm embrace that sees the mercury hover in the mid-20s, but who knows what August might bring?

Nope, if the warm weather has whetted the appetite, then it’s time to make hay while the sun shines and begin to seriously make plans for that dream home in Spain.
