Marbella's mayor (second from left) meets representatives of British Airways and Turespaña

The Mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, recently signed an agreement with British Airways to promote the resort of Marbella on 6,000 of its long-haul flights throughout July.

A dazzling promotional video promoting Marbella will be shown on passengers’ video screens during the summer. Mayor Muñoz is keen to further improve and increase the relationship between Marbella and the British market, which is thought to account for nearly 40 per cent of all tourists who frequent the upmarket resort…

The British Airways in-flight magazine will also lead with some Marbella-related articles in July, reiterating the resort’s beloved place in the heart of millions of British tourists. Muñoz has remarked that although Marbella is constantly seeking to attract newcomers to the town, it would always appreciate British holidaymakers’ loyalty to the region.

Figures from Turespaña and Marbella’s local tourism delegation show that the average Brit who visits Marbella will boast medium-high spending power, and it is estimated that they spend an average of €214 per day. The average length of stay is between nine and 15 days, with the majority arriving by plane at Málaga airport, hiring a car and staying at a hotel in and around the resort.

The average age of British tourists to Marbella ranges between 30 and 39, and most will stay within the vicinity of Marbella for the duration of their stay, using the local leisure and relaxation facilities. An average travelling party consists of professional couples arriving with family or friends.

The study also revealed some less surprising facts. Marbella’s climate, beaches and beach activities were the biggest draws for these tourists, which pretty much mirrors exactly the appeal that property buyers cite as reasons for favouring the Costa del Sol.

So, the Brits are coming, as they always do each and every summer. And with the added kudos that a British Airways endorsement carries, expect the trend of mid-to-high net-worth individuals using Marbella as their summer playground to continue for some time yet…
