At the same time, new build property sales were slower, but did begin to show an increase in 2017.
But now, the supply-demand balance has been righted, and data from Spain’s Oficemen Federation of cement producers indicates that building activity in 2018 is poised for a generous increase.
According to the figures, sales of cement for home building increased 11% in 2017, rising to 12.3 million tons. This was the first significant increase in a decade, and the experts in that industry forecast an additional 12% increase in sales in 2018.
Current demand is around just 20% of the levels seen in 2007, but that in itself is not a bad thing: those previous levels were proven to be unsustainable, meaning that for this year, activity in construction is likely to be just right to support continued growth of the new build sector.
