Miguel Ángel Jiménez at the launch of his Torremolinos Municipal Golf School

Local boy done good, Miguel Ángel Jiménezborn in Churriana, Málaga where he still lives – recently opened the Torremolinos Municipal School of Golf that bears his name…

Jiménez – who was named European Tour golfer of the month in November 2012 after his victory at the Hong Kong Open made him the oldest winner in Tour history at 48 years and 318 days; and who was also one of four vice-captains who led Europe to victory at the 2012 Ryder Cup in Medinah – has all the credentials, and then some, to launch an elite private Golfing Academy on the Costa del Sol.

But “wanting to give back”, he has instead opted to open the Torremolinos Municipal School of Golf – just a few kilometres away from where he lives – and as he says, “We have very popular prices and will be focused mainly on children and families, with special discounts for them.”

And all power to him. Because Jiménez – aka ‘The Mechanic’ – might drive a Ferrari, but also known as ‘the world’s most interesting golfer’, he’s never forgotten his roots.

Fellow Spanish golfing professionals José María Cañizares, Manuel Piñero, Juan Quirós and Manuel Quirós were among an impressive line-up of VIPs, friends and dignitaries who attended the opening. “This is a dream come true as golf has given me everything and I want to give back,” said Jiménez. “My goal was to develop and promote golf in this area and it’s been achieved with this opening.

The 7th hole honours the 12th hole at Augusta National

The 7th hole honours Jiménez's favourite hole in the whole world: the 12th at Augusta National

“I’ve designed the Par threes. The seventh honours the 12th hole at Augusta National, one of my favourite holes in the whole world.”

Other facilities at the 9-hole course occupying a 7-hectare site, include a 250-metre long driving range with a capacity for 40 players who’ll be able to practise either on natural or artificial grass, plus a swing analysis centre, while floodlighting will make it possible to play at night all year round.

The second phase will include a clubhouse, car park and relaxation areas.
