If you’re thinking about heading to the Costa del Sol this Easter to enjoy some early summer sunshine then you are in luck – a report by the Post Office has found that a typical holiday in the region is 15 per cent cheaper this year compared to 2014…
Based on the cost of typical holiday essentials such as eating out, accommodation, flights, ice cream, coffee, beer and wine, the study revealed that prices in Spain are lower than last year, largely thanks to the strength of the pound sterling against the euro.
And within Spain, it is the resorts of the Costa del Sol that are the cheapest, beating out the Canaries, the Balearics and those resorts further up the Mediterreanean Coast. In fact, the Costa del Sol is the second-cheapest Easter holiday destination for Brits in Europe, behind only Portugal’s Algarve.
“Although holidaymakers will get far more travel cash for their pounds in the eurozone, prices vary significantly between resorts, so the best advice is for canny travellers to cherry pick and book a resort where prices are cheapest,” said the Post Office’s Andrew Brown.
While Greece and Turkey prove affordable, the Easter period is traditionally a good time to visit Spain. Many hotels and airlines offer attractive deals at this time of the year in order to tempt holidaymakers from Britain.
For the Costa del Sol, the Easter season is the de facto opening of summer, and is the period when the weather begins to seriously heat up, the atmosphere becomes decidedly summery, and the many restaurants, bars, beaches and clubs begin to fill up.
The Post Office findings would suggest that the Costa del Sol will be a popular choice once again this Easter, thanks in part to the incredible amount of variety on offer in the region. Cheap N’ Cheerful holidays can be enjoyed in the resorts of Fuengirola and Torremolinos, those in search of luxury and glamour can head to Marbella and Puerto Banús, while adventure tourists keen on something a little different from the usual ‘Flip and Flop’ holiday can either head for the hills or scoot on down to Tarifa to enjoy some of the continent’s best wind and kitesurfing.
Indeed, according to travel company Health and Fitness Travel, demand for such pursuits in Europe is increasing, with a massive 82 per cent of Brits stating that staying active while away is now an important part of their holiday.
“Gone are the days when people want to return from holiday feeling sluggish with waistbands that little bit tighter,” said Health and Fitness Travel co-founder Paul Joseph. “More people lead cash-rich and time-poor lives, making it harder to focus on their own well-being. A health and fitness holiday can be a great way to reset the body.”
