Gas Natural Fenosa HQ

The Barcelona HQ of Gas Natural Fenosa, owners of Gas Natural Andalucía

At long last, Marbella – the undisputed jewel in the Costa del Sol crown – is cooking with gas! Or at least it very soon will be, and about time too. You’ll have twigged we’re not talking bottled gas here, but rather the nice, clean, odourless piped variety. Amazingly, especially considering that most other sizeable towns in Málaga province have been connected to natural gas for quite some time, Marbella is the last Andalusian town with more than 100,000 inhabitants to receive its own supply, and on Wednesday, Marbella mayor Ángeles Muñoz symbolically turned on the gas tap during the official inauguration marking the arrival of the new service.

In theory, natural gas is available to about 40% of Marbella homes (in Nueva Andalucía, San Pedro and on the Golden Mile), where Gas Natural Andalucía has already invested €2.3 million in nearly 24km of pipelines. In practice though, the company only has around 100 customers in the area to date, plus another 300 or so eagerly waiting for the pipes to be extended.

So the fact that the supplier will be spending a further €10.7 million over the next three years to increase the network of pipelines to 85km, is a real gas for the thousands of families who’ll soon have an alternative to being all-electric, or who can kiss goodbye – well not literally of course ‘cos that wouldn’t be nice – to those infuriating bottles of butane that always run out just when you’ve got friends round for supper.

Yep, I’m the first to admit I loathe and detest calor gas. Tell me it’s not just me though… is it?
