The wait is almost over. Just before the clocks go back, the weather dips slightly and the wind picks up, online streaming service Netflix will launch in Spain to the delight of millions of TV and movie fans across the country…
Overlooked in 2014 as the US-based service expanded across many parts of Europe, it was confirmed in the summer that Spain would be welcoming Netflix in the Autumn.
Further details have since been announced. Netflix has confirmed that the service will be priced at €7.99 per month for the basic package, which will allow customers to binge-watch some of the best TV series around, as well as the latest movies and documentaries from Hollywood and beyond.
Netflix originals such as the highly acclaimed House of Cards and Orange is the New Black will be available, allaying earlier fears that Spain would receive a watered-down version while Netflix tested the initial demand.
But the company has confirmed that users in Spain will be able to enjoy the full range of programmes, and will also have the opportunity to book the high definition package – priced at €8.99 per month – and the chance to watch on more than one screen simultaneously – a package that costs €11.99 per month.
In a recent newspaper interview in Spain, Netflix CEO Neil Hunt confirmed that the majority of internet-ready TVs sold in the country over the past 18 months are already Netflix compatible, meaning many thousands of Spaniards could be signed up to the service right away and with the minimum of fuss.
For those without the built-in Netflix service, Vodafone has already confirmed that it will partner with Netflix to allow customers to download the app and channel hop via their smartphone, provided they order a set-top box.
“Television on demand is the best model for the consumer because you can consume what you want, when you want to,” Hunt said. “You don’t have to wait until 7pm to start your content,” he added.
Content, House of Cards, a Breaking Bad binge or a Disney diet… whatever you want to call it, Netflix has changed the way people watch TV, and now Spain can get happily in on the act.
