Family disembarking from plane

Last year more than a million tourists stayed in holiday rental accommodation on the Costa del Sol – up 17 per cent on 2013

Whether your Costa del Sol property is standing empty – other than when you and your family or friends are visiting – or you’re thinking of buying a property to rent out, according to recent data from Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE), self-catering holidays on our Sunshine Coast have never been more popular…

Of course, it’s the space, freedom, privacy and cost that are the principal reasons why so many holidaymakers – especially those with children – prefer to rent a holiday home instead of staying in a hotel. And as reported this month in Spanish provincial daily Diario Sur, last year more than a whopping million tourists stayed in self-catering accommodation on the Costa del Sol, a substantial increase of 17 per cent compared to 2013.

Of that figure, 156,380 visitors stayed in camping sites; 46,060 chose rural accommodation; but with a total of 859,304 tourists it was the Coast’s holiday home sector that won hands down. At a grand total of 6.4 million, the number of nights spent in non-hotel accommodation on the Costa del Sol in 2014 was also up on the previous year by a very substantial 14.2 per cent.

So, it seems there’s never been a better time to put your property to work and to start earning you some significant income.

However, although the necessary regulations have been somewhat lacking in the past, Andalucía is now due to publish its own holiday rentals legislation in the first quarter of 2015, and it’s well worth reading all about it here.
