One-in-three online purchases in Spain are made via mobiles.

Spaniards are among the most tech comfortable people in the world, with one-in-three electronic purchases made in the country coming via mobile technology, a new study by The App Date – an app review service – has found…

This statistic places Spain fifth worldwide in terms of mobile commerce, and confirms a wider trend that Spaniards love their mobile phones more than almost any other nationality does.

According to The App Date’s research, the average Spaniard reaches for their phone the minute they wake up, while 30% are prone to checking it every ten minutes. Active app users in Spain number 28 million, more than half of the population, with 3.8 million apps downloaded in the country every day.

And when Spaniards have their phone in their hands? 90% of the time they are using apps such as Facebook, Twitter and Whatsapp, rather than making calls. Shopping online has grown in popularity in Spain in recent years, with the rise of app-based purchases swelling the volume of shopping done by Spaniards via their smartphones.

“The rapidness and simplification of payment, the ability to do it without your wallet, and the increased confidence in security terms have made it so that more and more Spaniards have opted for mobile commerce,” said The App Date report.

Unsurprisingly, the most active age group in app downloads and mobile purchases in Spain is those aged between 25 and 34 – this demographic accounts for 35% of all app users in Spain.

The data also revealed that 51% of users are male (hardly revelatory), that 84% of Spaniards prefer Android phones and just 12% have an Apple iPhone. Which begs the question: do 4% of Spaniards really use a Windows phone?
