Less than 48 hours after Belgium’s Nicolas Colsaerts so narrowly beat Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell in the finals of the Volvo World Match Play Championship 2012 at prestigious Finca Cortesin, near Casares… and already preparations are well under way for the next major golf tournament to be hosted by the Costa del Sol – the Benahavís Senior Masters, taking place at La Quinta Golf & Country Club from 1-3 June following the Pro-Am on 30-31 May…
England’s Carl Mason, the most successful player in the history of the European Senior Tour, will be defending his title at the 4th edition of the Benahavís Senior Masters which, in a break with tradition, moves from its mid-October slot to the beginning of June. Mason – who’s won a total of six times on Spanish greens and fairways, including the inaugural edition of the Benahavís Senior Masters in 2009, and again in 2011, as well as his maiden European Tour title in the Open de Andalucía in 1994 – will be joined by a strong Senior Tour field competing for a prize fund of €200,000.
Other contenders include Boonchu Ruangkit who won the Benahavís title in 2010, former Ryder Cup Captain Sam Torrance, fellow former Ryder Cup players such as Gordon Brand Jr., Antonio Garrido, Manuel Piñero and Mark James, plus reigning John Jacobs Trophy Champion Peter Fowler and – fresh from his recent victory at the Mallorca Open Senior – Gary Wolstenholme.
And in yet another break with tradition, renowned La Quinta Golf & Country Club – set in the heart of Golf Valley close to Marbella – is offering three amateur golfers the chance to play in the Benahavís Senior Masters Pro-Am, alongside Senior Tour player, former Ryder Cup Champion and the designer of La Quinta Golf, Manuel Piñero.
