The Diamond Jubilee, Gibraltar gets ready to partyProud of its reputation for being “more British than the British”, the streets of Gibraltar are already decked out in red, white and blue, and from street parties and bonfires to garden parties and parades, who needs to go back to Blighty to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee when the party to end all parties is taking place only a short drive along the Coast…

The main event – the Gibraltar Diamond Jubilee Flotilla – hosted by the Ocean Village marina, is being held on Monday 4 June. “Aside from all the enthusiasm on The Rock, we expect plenty of Brits and other nationalities along the Costa del Sol to come and join in the Jubilee pomp and circumstance,” says event organiser Ros Astengo.

Vessels of every kind imaginable will be taking part, all dressed in streamers and Union Jacks, with the Flotilla departing at midday to sail around the bay. There’s no competitive element involved, and entry is free. But it’s not only for boat-owners. You can buy a ticket from a range of Gibraltar’s licensed operators, including working boats, sailing boats, leisure and luxury craft, or you could get a group together and charter a yacht.

Then, as the Mediterranean sun sinks slowly into the sea, the beacon on the top of The Rock will be lit. The perfect end to a memorable day!
