A rare and fascinating insight into the everyday lives of some of the most famous movie stars of the 1950s and 1960s, ‘Esplendor de Hollywood’ showcases some of the iconic and intimate images taken by famous American photographer and director Sid Avery, who between 1946 and 1961 shot literally thousands of stunning photos for the most popular and avidly-read glossy magazines of the day. A long overdue tribute to his prolific talent, this is the first time the exhibition has come to Europe and it includes several images never before seen…
Hosted by La Térmica – Málaga’s newest cultural space which opened in 2012 – these are some of Avery’s greatest ever photographs, a veritable master-class in the art of the Hollywood ‘snapshot’ that he so memorably pioneered. Audrey Hepburn riding a bike with her pet dog in tow; James Dean on the set of Rebel Without a Cause; Marlon Brando putting out the rubbish; Rock Hudson emerging from his shower; and Elizabeth Taylor basking in the sun… are just some of the nostalgic and unforgettable photographs on show, captured by this extraordinary maestro of candid Tinseltown portraiture.
Avery, who later made history as the only photographer to shoot both the original 1960’s cast of Ocean’s Eleven and the 2001 remake – recreating his iconic group shot around the pool table – was also responsible for establishing mptvimages, the Motion Picture and Television Photo Archive, now run by his son, Ron.
‘Esplendor de Hollywood’ runs until 7 January at Sala 014, La Térmica, Avenida de los Guindos 48, Málaga.
Opening hours: Tuesdays to Saturdays from 11am to 2pm and 5pm to 9pm; Sundays from 12 noon to 7.30pm.
