The Telegraph

Well, jeeze, it’s nice to see the British press reporting some good news, but it isn’t really just for British homeowners, where it applies then it’s very good news for everyone.

The Telegraph reported recently that there was to be an amnesty for ‘illegally’ built homes under a new regional government initiative in Andalucía, in this reported instance relating to 11,000 homes in the Axarquía region.

Actually, this is part of a whole ongoing process where Spain’s national and regional governments are regularising much that was approved by local municipal town halls, often latterly accused of being corrupt, but seemingly having had the legitimate power to issue licences that were legal and valid in their view.

Well, it was all a bit of a mess really, and it all came to the fore around 2005 and was just one of a number of factors that ‘burst our property bubble’ back in the day, and is now finally being resolved area by area all these years later. Thank goodness.

Today, Marbella – and the Costa del Sol – is probably one of the safest areas to buy property in Europe, but boy, we certainly went through the mill for a lot of years, and we support wholeheartedly any amnesty and certainly justice for people such as the Prior family who saw their home – unbelievably – demolished in this whole traumatic process.

We have had our solution; I certainly hope that one day, the Priors will have theirs and rightful compensation. Does this put Spain back at the head of the field for owning a home in the sun? I hope so; there is much that says it fully deserves to be. And at least now we can certainly once again argue the case with anyone, anywhere who says there is better.
