Calmer seas ahead for Spain's job market as the summer season hits

The number of unemployed Spaniards fell for the first time in months in April as the traditional seasonal uplift began.

Spain’s jobless figures have now fallen below five million, which – while hardly anything to crow about – shows that the country’s forthcoming summer season is still a reliable source of income for many beleaguered Spaniards…

The figures from Spain’s Ministry of Labour show that 46,050 extra jobs were filled in April, trimming the jobless queue by one per cent to 4.99m. “The government will continue to work towards achieving its objective of halting the destruction of jobs,” Engracia Hidalgo, the Secretary of State for Employment, said in a statement.

The summer helps. As the mercury begins to rise and hotels start to fill up, Spain’s numerous beach resorts look towards the coming months with unbridled optimism.

The signs so far have been encouraging. Appetite for holidays in Spain remains strong across the continent, particularly since the Costa del Sol has been recognised as one of the most affordable holiday destinations in Europe.
