Enjoying Málaga’s plentiful places of interest after dark is the name of the game at Noche en Blanco, or White Night, which is held this Saturday.

“Female muses and creators” is the tagline for this year’s Noche en Blanco – or White Night – which takes place this Saturday night between 8pm and 2am

White Night, which returns to Málaga for the eleventh successive year, is a free cultural event that sees more than 200 activities, performances and exhibitions take centre stage at over 100 different spaces around the city in celebration of art, culture and the local community.

The community aspect is especially pertinent, since 90% of all submissions for individual contributions or installations from artists, creative managers and production companies on the theme of female creativity and inspiration have come from Málaga residents.

However, don’t be fooled into thinking that this is a small, parochial affair exclusively for malagueños. To give you an idea of its scale and popularity, the first edition of White Night in 2008 attracted crowds of around 30,000 visitors, but last year it drew in a staggering 230,000 individuals.

So, what is there to do?

In keeping with this year’s theme of the influence of women in the artistic and cultural spheres, music, dance, theatre and visual arts performances will focus on the recognition of female creativity.

Elsewhere, Málaga’s museums and cultural centres will open their doors to the public – free of charge, of course – as special activities will be run and tours organised on this unique night.

Visiting the Roman Theatre or the 11th-century Alcazaba – the Moorish citadel which sits above it – after dark are recommended guided tours, while taking a late night stroll around the English Cemetery to learn about its history is well worth reserving admission for.

There is also a programme of events specifically designed for children, called Nochecita en Blanco, which runs from 7pm until 11pm on calle Tomás Heredia.
